Trump's Woke Alarm Overlooks Europe's True Danger: Technological Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document offers a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "woke" agendas represent an existential risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective rests on a serious misreading of the reality. The true danger facing Europe is not societal but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Growth Divide Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. Over this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly half of the global 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Problem

The growing disparity stems from superior productivity growth in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of global tech leadership is decidedly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This gap prompts a pressing issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is Europe stand? Experts widely agree it is largely a contest between two between the United States and China, with European nations starting at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several key reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under one set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, there are causes for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to propose serious reform. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of sweeping changes.

With the right incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses significant strengths: skilled human capital, top-tier education systems, and premier labs. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly boost economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's technological decline has been steady. But, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
