Fresh analysis indicates that people who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals buying these treatments must be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a return to starting weight within about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
People who have come off the medication report a sudden return of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger activating and I was suddenly starving," recalled a patient.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural support.
