A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key government projects.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” declared the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the prior year. This project was closely associated with his government's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a significant growth of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked significant apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate halt in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national projects.
